Amid an oxygen crisis in hospitals of cities across India that have been badly hit by the second wave of COVID-19, as many as 24 patients died at a government hospital in Karnataka in the last 24 hours allegedly due to the shortage of oxygen.
The incident took place at a district hospital in Chamarajanagar where at least 144 patients are being treated. Family members of the victims astaged a demonstration at the hospital and alleged there was a shorten of oxygen and raised slogans. The district officials have, however, denied the allegations that all the patients died due to oxygen shortage at the hospital.
Chamarajanagar district in-charge Minister S Suresh Kumar, who is also the Primary and Secondary Education Minister, said he has ordered a death audit report from the district administration into the incident.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi attacked the central government over the Chamarajanagar incident and the deaths that have been reported across the country due to the oxygen shortage.
"Died or Killed? My heartfelt condolences to their families. How much more suffering before the ‘system’ wakes up?" Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet.
Meanwhile, India, in the last 24 hours, recorded 3,68,147 new Covid-19 cases, taking the cumulative tally to 1,99,25,604. As many as 3,417 new coronavirus-related fatalities were also recorded, taking the nationwide death toll to 218,959. Nearly 700 of these came from Maharashtra, 400 from Delhi, and about 300 from Uttar Pradesh.
