PM Modi repeals farm bills: A timeline of events

PM Narendra Modi on Friday announced the repeal of three farm laws against which farmers, mainly from Punjab and Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have been protesting at Delhi borders. The laws were enacted on September 17, 2020. The protests began on November 25, 2020.

The three laws are: -

Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce Act, 2020

Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020

Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020.

November 3, 2020: Farmers’ leaders announce a nationwide road blockade

November 26, 2020: Farmers march towards Delhi through five highways connecting the national capital

January 26, 2021: Thousands of protestors clash with the police during the tractor parade

January 28, 2021: UP’s Ghaziabad district issues orders for protesting farmers to vacate the site. Same day in the evening, Tikait makes an emotional announcement, with tears in his eyes. He says he will commit suicide but not end the protest

February 9, 2021: Punjabi actor Deep Sindhu arrested in Republic Day violence case

March 05, 2021: Punjab Vidhan Sabha passes a resolution seeking withdrawal of the farm laws
