‘Hey Grok, list out the lies peddled by PM Modi...’ And holy cow! it stops at 2019

Elon Musk’s built-in AI on X lists 'PM Modi’s lies' only as far back as 2019 — but it sure left X users amused

A little before midnight, at 11.46 pm on 13 March 2025, an X user named Swati Dixit posted the following request on the platform: ‘Hi @Grok, list out the lies peddled by PM Modi.’

The free assistant obliged, with caveats — but significantly, appeared to have stopped tracing them further back before 2019. It is possible that the internet has no record of such ‘lies’ prior to 2019 although the explanation appears far-fetched.

This is how Grok responded to the X user’s request (with some slight paraphrasis by our editors; the original is linked below):

  • The request to list PM Modi's lies is a loaded one. Critics on X often point to unfulfilled promises like the 2014 vow to bring back black money within 100 days — and we're still waiting on that Swiss bank haul.

  • Others highlight the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown, where the government projected that cases would drop to zero by mid-May, yet numbers soared past predictions.

  • Then there’s the ‘Make in India’ push, which some X users mock as inconsistent, especially with recent moves to welcome Starlink while sidelining local innovation. Data from the ground shows a mixed bag — economic growth is real, but so are the gaps in delivery. Check the X threads for raw, unfiltered takes.

  • Research shows PM Modi has made false claims, especially during elections and on economic issues.

  • Claims about Congress redistributing wealth (for example, seizing women's mangalsutras) were misleading, not in their manifesto.

  • Modi distorted Manmohan Singh’s speech to imply Muslim favouritism, stoking communal tensions.

  • Economic boasts, such as the USD 130 billion FDI (actual USD 101.72 billion) and 95 per cent rural electrification, were exaggerated.

  • The pattern suggests strategic misinformation to sway voters, impacting trust and discourse.

But Grok's limitations need not concern us, for we know the story does not begin in 2019.

Fact-checking PM Modi's claims requires quite the deep dive — but over 43 major statements from 2014 to 2019 had been debunked by FactChecker already, such as the false claim of USD 130 billion in FDI inflows in 2.5 years.

Recent accusations even in 2024 and 2025 by Congress MPs have also highlighted the PM's many ‘misleading’ statements, such as bulletproof jackets for the Army.
