At least 792 inmates at a jail in Central California have tested positive for COVID-19, making it the worst-hit in the US federal prison system.
Nearly 70 per cent of the inmates at Federal Correctional Institution Lompoc have tested positive, exploding by more than 300 in recent days, Xinhua news agency quoted the Los Angeles Times as saying in a report on Saturday citing prison officials.
Eleven staff members were also infected at the Lompoc facility, which houses 1,162 low-security inmates.
A military mobile hospital has been built on the grounds to cope with the growing number of stricken patients, according to the Los Angeles Times report.

Apart from Shillong which currently has two active COVID-19 cases, the Meghalaya government has allowed shops to reopen and vehicles to ply across the state from Monday.
The decision was taken at a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, official sources said.
"The deputy commissioners and district transport officers have been asked to work out the modalities for regulating (public and private transport) on a rotation basis," Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said on Saturday.

Twenty-three Surat returnees were among 24 people who tested positive for COVID-19 in Odisha on Saturday, taking the total cases in the state to 294, the Health and Family Welfare department said.
Of the 24 fresh COVID cases, Ganjam reported 18, while three came from Mayurbhanj and one each from Nayagarh, Bhadrak and Sundergarh.
At present, there are 224 active cases in the state and 68 people have recovered. Two people from Bhubaneswar have succumbed to the disease, an official said adding that 343 persons are in hospital isolation.

More than four million confirmed cases of coronavirus have been reported around the world, according to a data collated by Johns Hopkins University.
The global death toll has also risen to above 277,000, the BBC reported citing the data.
The US remains the worst-hit country, accounting for over a quarter of confirmed cases and a third of deaths.
Experts warn the true number of infections is likely to be far higher, with low testing rates in many countries skewing the data.
Daily death tolls are continuing to drop in some nations, including Spain, but there is concern that easing lockdown restrictions could lead to a "second wave" of infections.
In addition, governments are bracing for economic fallout as the pandemic hits global markets and supply chains.
A senior Chinese official has told local media that the pandemic was a "big test" that had exposed weaknesses in the country's public health system. The rare admission, from the director of China's National Health Commission, Li Bin, comes after sustained criticism abroad of China's early response.

The rising number of coronavirus patients in Madhya Pradesh has alarmed the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government. The Health Department said 116 new cases were added overnight to take the total number 3,457 by Saturday evening. On Saturday, 29 corona deaths were reported.
The 625 containment areas in the state shows the Central government will be in no hurry to relax the restriction in movements under lockdown. The state has recorded 211 deaths so far.
