J&K police officials finally provide information on the ground reality, about 2000 detained

News website The Quint spoke to the Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar and some superintendents of Police from different districts and found out that over 1500-2000 people have been detained since the abrogation of Article 370. Ever since the scrapping, this is the first direct report from police officials.

According to The Quint, after collaborating all the data found from different districts, the total number of people detained seems to be around 2000. These people have been detained on the charges of arson and stone-pelting. The most number of detentions, around 250, have happened in the Srinagar district; in Bandipora, about 50 people were detained and around 70 have been detained in Budgam.

Political detainees are about 60-70 in number. Out of these, 40 are detained in the Sher-i- Kashmir Institute in Srinagar and 20 others have been detained in Jammu. There have been interrogations and subsequent releases too, but no confirmed numbers were released by the administration, as per The Quint.

According to a report in The Quint, some shops open in some areas, including in Srinagar downtown which is under civil curfew, between 7 to 10 AM, and around 7 to 9 pm. Attendance in the government offices is 50-60 percent; most branches of the Jammu and Kashmir Bank remain shut. Skeletal private conveyance is on the roads, but not in Srinagar downtown. Usually, all the shops remain closed due to fear of the curfew for the most part of the day.
