Detention of Rahul, Priyanka illegal, says Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday condemned the Uttar Pradesh police and termed the detention of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as "illegal".

Taking to Twitter, Gehlot said, "I strongly condemn the way UP police has detained Congress leader Rahul Gandhi ji & Priyanka Gandhi ji illegally. They misbehaved with Rahul ji. This is undemocratic & brutal use of force. UP BJP govt's attempt to harass opposition leaders like this is reprehensible."

"UP BJP govt's actions smacks of political vendetta. They are acting in a dictatorial manner," he said.

Rahul and Priyanka were detained near Yamuna Expressway when the duo, after being stopped on the highway, decided to march to Hathras to meet the family of the UP Dalit woman who was gang raped and died in a Delhi hospital earlier this week.

Woman found hanging along with her threee kids in UP

In a shocking incident, a woman was found hanging in her house along with her three kids at Dibiyapur area of Aurraiya district in Uttar Pradseh.

According to the police, the bodies were found hanging with a saree from a hook in the room at their house on Thursday afternoon.

Police officials have so far, refused to comment on the incident and other family members also did not say a word on what happened.

19,000 American Airlines workers to be furloughed

At least 19,000 American Airlines workers will be furloughed from Thursday, the Texas-based airline said in a statement, adding that it would reverse the move if Congress reaches a deal to extend aid.

In the statement issued on Wednesday, CEO Doug Parker said that he spoke with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and that negotiations were continuing on an agreement that would include the extension of funds, The Hill news website reported.

"Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that any of these efforts will come to fruition. However, in an effort to encourage cooperation and keep hope alive or our team, I informed the Secretary that if these efforts to extend (the Payroll Support Program) are successful over the next few days, we will reverse our furlough processes and recall any impacted team members," Parker was quoted as saying in the statement.

Soldier killed in Pak firing in J&K district

A soldier was killed in action in ceasefire violation by Pakistan in the Krishna Ghati sector along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district.

Pakistan violated the ceasefire on Wednesday night, officials said.

The soldier has been identified as Lance Naik Karnail Singh.

"GOC @ Whiteknight_IA & all ranks salute the braveheart Lance Naik Karnail Singh, who made the supreme sacrifice in Krishna Ghati Sector on the night of 30 Sep'20 & offer condolences to his family," the army said in a tweet.

There has been a spurt in ceasefire violations along the LoC in the Kupwara district of the Kashmir valley, and to the south of Pir Panchal in Rajouri and Poonch districts in Jammu.

Pakistan has been targeting the civilian areas and defence positions with long range mortars and small arms.

The army said it is giving a benefiting response to all acts of aggression by Pakistan along the LoC.

8-yr-old raped in Azamgarh village

An eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 20-year-old man in a village in Jiyanpur area of the Azamgarh district, police said on Wednesday.

The accused took the girl with himself from her home telling her mother that she would have her bath in his house, the police said, quoting from the complaint lodged by the girl's mother.

The accused had also taken from the girl's mother her clothes, the police aid.

But when the child returned from the neighbour's house, she was writhing in pain and bleeding, the police said.

The girl was rushed to a hospital where her condition was stated to be serious, the police said.

Azamgarh Superintendent of Police Sudhir Kumar Singh said the accused, identified as Danish, has been arrested.

14-year-old raped in UP's Bulandshahr

A minor girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr, police said on Wednesday.

Senior Superintendent of Police Santosh Kumar Singh said on Wednesday night, the girl's father submitted a complaint in this regard, alleging that his 14-year-old daughter was raped by their neighbour Rizwan (20) on Tuesday night.

The victim is undergoing medical treatment. A report has been lodged against the accused and efforts are on to nab him. The accused will be taken into custody soon, police said.

Global COVID-19 cases surpass 33.8 million mark: Johns Hopkins

The overall number of global coronavirus has surpassed 33.8 million, while the deaths have increased to nearly 1,012,900, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

As of Thursday, the total number of cases stood at 33,874,283 and the fatalities rose to 1,012,894, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 7,229,723 and 206,905, respectively, according to the CSSE.

India comes in the second place in terms of cases at 6,225,763, while the country's death toll soared to 97,497.

The other top 15 countries with the maximum amount of cases are Brazil (4,810,935), Russia (1,170,799), Colombia (829,679), Peru (811,768), Spain (769,188), Argentina (751,001), Mexico (743,216), South Africa (674,339), France (604,031), Chile (462,991), Iran (457,219), the UK (455,846), Bangladesh (363,479), Iraq (362,981) and Saudi Arabia (334,605), the CSSE figures showed.

Brazil currently accounts for the second highest number of fatalities at 143,952.

The countries with a death toll above 10,000 are Mexico (77,646), the UK (42,233), Italy (35,894), Peru (32,396), France (32,396), Spain (31,791), Iran (26,169), Colombia (25,998), Russia (20,630), Argentina (16,937), South Africa (16,734), Chile (12,741), Ecuador (11,355), Indonesia (10,740) and Belgium (10,001).
