Heavy rain lashed the national capital and neighboring areas late evening on Friday, bringing a respite to people reeling under intense heat.

The city witnessed a sunny morning, but the sky turned cloudy later in the evening, with the temperature docking at 35 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was recorded at 21 degrees.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted "partly cloudy sky with possibility of development of thunder lightning" for Saturday and light rain for the next week.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) of the city also dropped down to 94 microgram per cubic meter and stood in the "satisfactory" category. It was above 150 yesterday due to a dust storm from the western region.

A 49-year-old woman died

after her teenage son allegedly set her on fire in Omsanabad district of Maharashtra over her refusal to give money to him, police said on Friday.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at Ter town in Osmanabad district, they said.

The 17-year-old accused was arrested and sent to a juvenile home in Osmanabad, police said.

Srinagar-Leh highway closed due to fresh snowfall

The Srinagar-Sonamarg-Leh highway has been closed for the vehicular traffic after the area received fresh snowfall at the Zojila pass in the Kashmir Valley, officials said on Friday.

A Border Roads Organisation official said the Zojila pass is being experiencing a fresh spell of moderate snowfall over the past few days.

The bad weather conditions and the continuous triggering of avalanches and landslides at some places has forced the closure of the highway on Thursday, he said.

Visually impaired woman raped in MP

A 53-year-old visually impaired woman was allegedly raped by an unidentified person in Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal district in the early hours of Friday, police said.

The victim, who is a banker, was alone at home as her husband remained stranded in another state due to the COVID-19 lockdown, inspector Chandra Bhan Patel of Shahpura police station said.

According to the police complaint, the victim was asleep in her home, located near a hospital, when an unidentified man entered her room and raped her, he said.

"A case has been registered under section 376 (rape) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and hunt is on for the accused," he said.

The victim was sent for medical examination, he added.

Pak Army shells civilian areas, forward posts in Poonch

The Pakistan Army on Friday shelled civilians areas and forward posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in town sectors of Poonch district, drawing retaliation from the Indian Army, officials said.

This is 13th consecutive day of shelling and firing by Pakistani troops along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir.

On Thursday, Pakistan targeted civilian areas and forwards posts along the LoC in three sectors of Poonch and Rajouri districts, officials said.

"At about 1100 hours, the Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation along LoC in Qasba & Kirni sectors of district Poonch by firing with small arms", Defence spokesman Lt Col Devender Anand said.

The Indian Army retaliating befittingly in all these sectors, he added.

Two militants killed in encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian

Two militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district on Friday, police said.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the Dairoo area of Shopian in south Kashmir in the morning following specific information about the presence of militants there, a police official said.

He said the search operation turned into an encounter after militants fired upon security forces, who retaliated.

In the ensuing gunfight, two militants were killed, the official said, adding their identity and group affiliation is being ascertained.
