Mumbai rains LIVE: 4 killed, traffic hit for fourth day

A person was electrocuted and three were killed after being struck by lightning as rain pounded Mumbai and many parts of Maharashtra for the fourth consecutive day, disrupting normal life and hitting air, road and rail traffic, officials said on Monday.

A 30-year-old man, Mohammed Ayub Kazi, was electrocuted inside his home in Shivajinagar, Govandi suburb in north-east Mumbai. He was rushed to the Rajawadi Hospital where he was declared dead.

Three others, including a woman, were killed and two injured after being struck by ligtning as they took shelter from heavy rain in a shed in Solapur on Monday afternoon.

"The five victims were waiting for the rains to subside in a shed near the Mandrup village when suddenly lighting struck them. The three killed are Parvati M. Kore, 55, Chatursingh J. Rajpu, 41 and Sanket D. Chormule, 17. The other two have been rushed to the district hospital," Mandrup police official Baburao Rathod

Mumbai residents woke up to heavy rains on Monday, with the downpour resulting in water logging in several areas of the city and leading to traffic congestion on roads and delays in train movement.

The Meteorological Department warned of "extremely heavy" rainfall in adjoining areas of Thane and Palghar on July 2, 4 and 5. A few places in Mumbai could get heavy to very heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday, it added.

Though there was a respite from the heavy showers in the afternoon, trains were running late on all the lines. In a few areas like Chembur, water entered houses, prompting citizens to blame the BMC.

Passengers may kindly take note: Due to heavy rain, T/N 22961 Surat-Hapa Intercity Express of 01.07.2019 will run ex Vadodara to Ahmedabad and will remain partially cancelled between Ahmedabad-Hapa.

Subsequently T/N 22962 Hapa-Surat Intercity Express of 02.07.2019 will remain cancelled between Hapa-Ahmedabad for want of rake. Inconvenience caused is regretted.

Heavy rains during the night and on Monday morning in Mumbai and its outskirts inundated low-lying areas, delayed trains and slowed down vehicular movement on roads.

Several local train services, considered the lifeline of Mumbai, were cancelled or short-terminated as a temporary bamboo structure erected for civil work fell on an overhead wire near the Marine Lines station on the Western line, an official said.

The weather station in Santacruz recorded 91 mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Monday, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said, predicting more showers in the city and in the parched Marathwada and Vidarbha regions of Maharashtra.

The vehicular movement from suburbs towards south Mumbai and the Bandra-Kurla Complex, where several corporate houses and private companies are located, was slow due to the incessant showers.

With a view to closely monitor the situation in Borivali-Mira Road- Virar section due to Mumbai rains and high tides, regular inspection is being done by Shri V K Tripathi, AGM WR. Sr Officers are keeping close watch on improving the situation.

Western Railway, on Monday 1 July, delegated 484 Railway Protection Force (RPF) to ensure safety and avoid panic during the massive crowds gathered at railway stations due to the heavy rainfall.

In a statement, the Western Railway PRO said, "for better crowd management and ensuring smooth flow of passengers, especially on FOBs and staircases, Senior RPF officials along with RPF staff has been deployed at 29 Suburban Stations of WR.”

It said that 484 RPF staff, including 128 female personnel, are manning the stations and Foot Over Bridges and are directing the crowd for safe and smooth movement. PCSC along with DIG-RPF and Sr DSC and other RPF officers is at station monitoring the situation.

Intense spells of rainfall likely to continue in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar during the next two hours, the India Meteorological Department has predicted.

Children wade through the water to get to school as streets in many parts of Mumbai have been flooded due to the heavy rainfall.

The Western Railway has suspended trains between Churchgate and Marine Line stations.
