He was arrested from his hometown Jehanabad in Bihar on January 28.

Imam had done his Masters from IIT-Mumbai before joining JNU to pursue his Ph. D in Historical Studies. Sharjeel triggered a row after a video of him giving a call to split the northeast region from India went viral. Imam was heard saying in an audio clip that Assam should be cut off from the rest of India and taught a lesson, as Bengalis - both Hindus and Muslims - are being killed or put into detention centers.
