US President Donald Trump on Thursday, 14 August, once again invoked his role, contribution and experience in resolving an India–Pakistan military standoff, warning that the situation at the time had reached the brink of nuclear conflict.

Talking to reporters Trump said, “If you look at Pakistan and India, that was — planes were being knocked out of the air, six or seven planes came down,” Trump told reporters. “They were ready to go, maybe nuclear. We solved that.”

The president's statement at the White house came just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on India's 79th Independence Day.

Trump described the episode as one of several major international conflicts his administration addressed, noting that he “solved six of them” in just over six months, including “one war raging… for 37 years” and another in the Congo with Rwanda lasting 31 years.

Turning to the current war in Ukraine, Trump said, “I thought this would be maybe an easier one. It never made sense, this war. It would have never happened when I was president. If I were president this war would have never happened.”

He called the Ukraine conflict “actually the most difficult” among recent diplomatic efforts and reiterated his belief that the fighting could be stopped under his leadership.

Previewing his upcoming Alaska meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin, Trump said it was the first step in a two-stage process aimed at securing peace in Ukraine.

“This meeting sets up the second meeting, The second meeting is going to be very, very important because that’s going to be a meeting where they make a deal.” The follow-up session would involve “President Putin, President Zelenskyy, myself and maybe we will bring some of the European leaders along, maybe not.”

“I think President Putin will make peace. I think President Zelenskyy will make peace,” Trump said. “We’ll see if they can get along and if they can, it’ll be great."
