This gruesome case is a telling indictment of women’s safety in Bihar, where they are frequently victims of harassment and crime, the Congress has said

The body of a woman with 10 nails hammered into her feet was found in Bihar's Nalanda district on 6 March, Thursday.

The incident occurred in Bahadurpur village, under the jurisdiction of Chandi Police Station in the district on Wednesday evening, 5 March.

The body was spotted by the local villagers, who alerted the police authorities.

Acting on the information, Chandi Police reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Biharsharif Sadar Hospital for a post mortem.

"Investigation is underway to determine how she ended up on the roadside near the Bahadurpur village," said Suman Kumar, SHO of the Chandi Police Station.

Police suspected that the woman might have been raped before the murder.

After the incident, RJD's Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar assembly raised the issue in the House, accusing chief minister Nitish Kumar of failing to protect women in his own home district.

Tejashwi Yadav also uploaded a post on his social media platform X, saying: "Bihar ranks among the top states in crimes against women. The CM should be ashamed. If someone is not affected by this soul-stirring gruesome incident, that too in his home district, then he is not human."

Tejashwi has been continuously attacking the Nitish government over "rising" crime and "deteriorating" law and order situation in the state.

In a post on X, the Congress also condemned the act and JD(U)'s BJP-allied government, calling the state of affairs in Bihar a "a bad dream for women".

Just this year alone, the Congress pointed out, Bihar's treatment of women and girls — and the absence of their safety — has grabbed several headlines:

• 5 March 2025: A minor girl was gang-raped in Sitamarhi, Bihar

• 1 March 2025: A woman was shot dead in the capital Patna

• 1 February 2025: A disabled woman was brutally raped in Katihar

• 24 January 2025: A 65-year-old woman was gang-raped over a minor dispute.
