Tanker hit by ‘unknown projectile’ entering Strait of Hormuz, 2 crew injured

A tanker was struck by an “unknown projectile” as it entered the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, injuring two crew members, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said.

The two crew members sustained minor injuries, while the vessel continued towards its next port of call under its own power. There was no reported environmental impact from the incident, according to UKMTO. The identity of the tanker and the origin of the projectile were not immediately known.

The incident comes as some commercial vessels have resumed using the strategic waterway, although traffic remains far below pre-war levels. Reuters reported that only 17 commodity vessels crossed the strait over the weekend, compared with 37 the previous week and a pre-war average of about 125 vessels a day.

The Strait of Hormuz is a major global energy route, with about a fifth of the world's oil supply passing through it in normal conditions.

Yemen fighting kills 164 in six days

The World Health Organisation said 164 people were killed and 516 injured in fighting across Yemen between 13 and 18 September, taking the total number of casualties since 6 August to 3,672, including 674 deaths and 2,998 injuries.

Lahj province has emerged as an active frontline, with 58 deaths and 226 injuries reported there over six days.

The fighting between Iran-backed Houthi rebels and Saudi-backed government forces has also triggered a fresh displacement crisis. The International Organisation for Migration said 129,438 people had been displaced across seven provinces within a matter of weeks, with 11,352 people displaced in just three days from 18 September.

Israel remains on alert during Yom Kippur

Israel's military remained on heightened alert as the country observed Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism. The military said it had reinforced frontline forces after an Israeli settler was killed in the occupied West Bank on Sunday. A Palestinian suspect was detained following a search.

Red Sea film festival postponed

Organisers of the Red Sea International Film Festival said the event has been postponed until late 2027. The foundation cited the timing and logistical requirements involved in staging the international event and did not directly link the decision to heightened regional security tensions.
